TSA Interview

July 31st, 2007

Bruce Schneier got a chance to interview the head of the TSA, Kip Hawley. In case you haven’t flown in the past 5 years or so, the TSA is the group putting enormous hassle on any airline passenger. They say that they are doing it to protect the airline passengers, but most people would believe otherwise, and after reading part 1 of Bruce’s interview, I have to agree.

I think your premise is wrong. There are consequences to coming to an airport with a bomb and having some of the materials taken away at the checkpoint. Putting aside our layers of security for the moment, there are things you can do to get a TSO’s attention at the checkpoint. If a TSO finds you or the contents of your bag suspicious, you might get interviewed and/or have your bags more closely examined. If the TSO throws your liquids in the trash, they don’t find you a threat.

If it’s not a threat, then why do you need to take it? You yourself just said it’s not a threat.

Or search the Internet for “BeerBelly.” It’s a device you can strap to your chest to smuggle beer into stadiums, but you can also use it smuggle 40 ounces of dangerous liquid explosive onto planes. The magnetometer won’t detect it. Your secondary screening wandings won’t detect it. Why aren’t you making us all take our shirts off?

The TSA is not doing a very good job preventing anything. Bruce brings up the point that the terrorists can watch what the TSA is doing, and do something they aren’t watching for. The TSA is only watching for things that have happened in the past. Which is mostly just an inconvenience for airline passengers.

Part 2 is available.

Model T Defeats Hummer In Hillclimb

July 30th, 2007

In Evansville, Indiana, Gary Le Fever drove his 1921 Model T against a Hummer H2 in a hillclimb event, and won. Yes, you read correctly, and Model T defeated a Hummer. Although Gary’s Model T wasn’t factory stock, it bested a machine “made” for the dirt.

I say “made” because I’ve never actually seen one off the pavement, so in all actuality, it might get hung up on a tiny rock. Hummers seem to be owned by wanna be gangsters, or soccer moms, and usually only carry one person.

When the flag dropped, Le Fever punched both feet to the floor. He crossed the finish line in 9.96 seconds. Later the Hummer had its turn: 10.74.

Not only did the Model T beat the Hummer, it beat every other comer, including a modern turbocharged Dodge diesel and the county sheriff’s patrol car.

MacThemes Theme Contest

July 29th, 2007

MacThemes is holding a contest to see who can produce a mockup for a theme. All you have to do it submit a mockup of your idea for a theme, and the judges will pick 3 form the entry pool. Once the 3 winning themes have been decided, you’ll be able to work with a well known artist to produce the theme.

We’re ecstatic to announce the MacThemes Theme For a Week Contest. With over 13,000 elements to theme in OSX the grueling task of creating and producing a theme takes the right kind of artist. That’s why we decided to shake things up a bit. Instead of a long, drawn out development period, with little interaction from users and meager rewards at the end, the Theme For a Week Contest, as its name implies, lasts a week, with a (mockup) development process as clear as glass and rewards fit for a king (of Macs).

Get to work, and produce a fantastic mockup, so that we can use it on our computers later, and maybe you’ll win the $1000 bundle of software. Besides, you’ll be working with an awesome artist to put it in a working piece.

New Keyboard Rumors

July 28th, 2007

Engadget has posted pictures of a new keyboard rumored to be the next keyboard from Apple.

It looks alot like the MacBook keyboard, and I very much like the style, but I’m not quite convinced that this is real, and if it is, why did Apple do some of the stuff it did?

Given the above, I’d give this, oh, a 75% chance of being a developmental version of the new Apple keyboard. I’d say there’s very little chance this keyboard will ship in this form.

There are too many unknowns here. Why move the volume keys over the middle, when it fits fine above the numberpad on the current keyboard?
